On the road to Bercy: Bassa Mawem : "today, I have the capacity to win any competition"

For Bassa Mawem, leader of the French speed climbing team, the equation is not difficult : "this season, I’m going to try to win everything". The Climbing World Championships included?

Do not see any arrogance. Bassa Mawem does not simply double speak. His weakness until now was regularity. His 2016 challenge? Not to miss any competition. And try to grab a medal in each of them.
"This does not mean that it’s easy, far from it. In fact, I didn’t get on the podium during the two first steps of the season in China. But I did not miss it completely as well, I’ve been quite steady (6th in Chongqing and 5th in Nanjing). I’m not disappointed about the beginning of my season", assures Bassa Mawem, who took the national title on the 17th of April in Voiron.

"I don’t necessarily want to break the world record on each run, but rather do coherent results in each competition. I want to climb systematically around 6’20. Even if I need to go a little bit slower than I could. I changed my climbing and my practice towards this objective. I don’t want to do anymore great performances in the first rounds of the final and then fall in the run after."

To achieve this goal, the French climber - who trains about 30 hours each week- decided to focus on the competitions one by one, as they came.

And what about the World Championships? "I’m not focused on Bercy for now. Of course, this competition has a special flavor, especially because it will be the first World Championships where I’ll be able to challenge the bests. Today, I know I can win any competition."
