On the road to Bercy: Gautier Supper, “above all: having fun”
What would be successful World Championships for Gautier Supper, one of the main climbers of the lead French Team? “A competition where I would have had a lot of fun, and where I would have experienced good feelings.” But before that, it's time to train!
What would be successful World Championships for Gautier Supper, one of the main climbers of the lead French Team? “A competition where I would have had a lot of fun, and where I would have experienced good feelings.” But before that, it's time to train!
“For me a podium during the World Championships is the same as a medal in the World Cup overall ranking: they are both the biggest achievements in our sport”, explains Gautier Supper. “With one big difference: during the World Championships, you're not allowed to make any mistakes.” A bit intimidating? “Exciting actually! Performing that one day, at the right time, that's what makes this title such a magical one!”.
But Gautier is positive: the gold is not the only thing that pushes him to train hard every day. “Above all, I want to experience good feelings on the wall. Obviously, it goes with good results. But there's something else: the main part for me is to have fun during the competition.”
Having fun, experiencing good feelings, this is what Gautier is climbing for. And what he's working on during his training sessions. “Since last year, I have prepared my competitions with Corentin Le Goff, the lead French team coach, in Voiron, the national training center. Our main goal? Improving my weakness, such that I'll be able to feel comfortable when I have to climb on small holds, or have to do tight movements.”
It forces the climber to get out of his comfort zone every day. “It's a bit challenging for the mind, but it works: I'm peaceful now when I see in competition those kind of routes. I improved my confidence: the most important thing for me is to climb without pressure.”
